Tommy Yarbrough Obituary, Death – On February 1, 2022, at the age of 87, Thomas Gibson Yarbrough, who resided in Sumerduck, Virginia, passed away at his home. On May 6, 1934, he was born in Nashville, Tennessee, to parents named Geneva Parham and Lucien Bell Yarbrough. He was the oldest of their children. Tom graduated from Fairfax High School in Fairfax, Virginia, in the year 1952. He began his education at Emory and Henry College, from which he graduated in 1956. Subsequently, he attended the Medical College of Virginia, where he earned a degree in dentistry in 1963.
Tom worked for Allied Chemical, the United States Army’s 82nd Airborne Division, and he was also a science teacher and coach in West Virginia when he was first starting out in his career. After graduating from dental school, he worked as a dentist in the areas of Gainesville, McLean, and Hartsville, South Carolina. Tom’s practiced dentistry for a total of 33 years.
Tom was an active member of the 4-H club, the FFA, the Varsity Club, the Science club, and the Student Government during his time in high school. In college, in addition to being a varsity athlete in both football and basketball, he served as President of the Beta Zeta Fraternity. Tom maintained his involvement in the community by holding leadership positions in a variety of organizations, including the Boy Scouts, the Ruritan Club, Little League Baseball, the Youth Soccer Association, and the National Capital Soccer League. Additionally, Tom was a member of the Christ Episcopal Church that was located in Brandy Station, Virginia.
Tom was an avid sports fan and also enjoyed a wide variety of other activities, such as hunting, fishing, photography, golf, gardening, traveling, hiking, and bird dog training. Fly fishing was one of his particular passions, and once he retired, he taught himself how to tie his own flies.
Tom’s parents, his wife Fay Wynn Yarbrough, his sisters Lucy Yarbrough Haynes and Geneva Yarbrough, his brother Lucien Bell Yarbrough, his daughter Carey Hall-Warner, and his son Thomas Gibson Yarbrough, Jr. all passed away before him. His wife of 52 years, Patricia Cullum Yarbrough, a daughter, Suzanne Yarbrough Bowman, and three sons, Wynn William Yarbrough, Walter Cullum Yarbrough, and Christopher Lucien Yarbrough, are among the people he leaves behind after his passing. Additionally, Tom is survived by his 10 grandchildren as well as his 3 great-grandchildren.
