On Monday evening, a memorial service honoring Liegea Lopez, a well-respected community activist, was held at Levine’s on Jefferson Boulevard. The service included the lighting of candles in memory of Lopez. There were literally hundreds of people from the surrounding area who came to attend the event.

Lopez succumbed to the injuries she sustained in a car accident that took place early on Monday morning and was pronounced dead as a result of her injuries. On Dowdy Ferry Road, a friend of Lopez’s family claims that a driver going the opposite direction hit her vehicle head-on. The driver was traveling in the opposite direction. Lopez maintained a presence in the neighborhood thanks to the success of her barbershop, Bishop Barbers, which she owned and managed.

Friends of Lopez have stated that she frequently hosted and attended community events in the parking lot of the department store Levine’s, which is where the vigil was held. Friends of Lopez also stated that she was an active member of the community. Concerts, giveaways, and cookouts were some of the activities that took place during these events.

She was also very active in efforts to support women who needed assistance and to encourage members of the community to exercise their right to vote. She was a member of several organizations that worked toward these goals. JR Huerta, the person who founded Dallas Youth Sports and a friend of Lopez’s, described her as a very generous person by saying that she contributed a significant amount of time, money, and effort to all of her events. Huerta was also a friend of Lopez.

According to Huerta, the fact that their lives were frequently entwined with one another was due to the fact that they both participated in various forms of community activism. The notorious Lopez was in charge of the organization of each year’s back-to-school event. At the event that was held every year at the barbershop, hundreds of the younger children living in the neighborhood were provided with free haircuts as well as backpacks that were stuffed with a variety of different school supplies.
