Drew Nixon Obituary, Death – Drew 15-year-old from San Jose, California passed away on February 10th, 2023. The state of California is where Drew’s birth took place. The interment service for Thomas L. Nixon, who passed away at the age of 86, will take place on Friday, November 14 at 1:00 p.m. at the Hooper-Huddleston and Horner Funeral Home. The ceremonies will be presided over by the Reverends Mike Head, Charlie Hutchinson, and Bill Parkerson. At three o’clock in the afternoon, there will be a brief service held at the graveside in the Gordonsville Cemetery located in Smith County. At the funeral home on Thursday, November 13, the family will greet friends beginning at five in the afternoon and continuing until eight in the evening.
Tom, as he was fondly known by many, passed away on Tuesday, November 11th, surrounded by his loved ones at home after a protracted battle with sickness. On October 7, 1928, he was born to Landa Nixon and Nannie Broyles Nixon, who have since passed away. He received his formal education in Smith County, Tennessee, as well as in Alpine, Texas. After completing his education, he found employment as a cost accountant with Massman Metcalfe Hamilton, the construction company that was responsible for the Center Hill Dam. After that, he went on to become a member of the United States Army and served as a corporal during the Korean War. For his service, he was awarded the National Defense Service Medal and the Good Conduct Medal.
Nixon Brothers’ Service Station, Dairy Mart, and a U-Haul dealership were all co-owned by him and his brother Beverly (Pappy) for a combined 35 years of business ownership. After he retired, he spent several years volunteering his time with the Putnam County Election Commission, working in the early voting department. He was saved as a youngster at Lancaster Baptist Church, and later became a member of First Baptist Church of Cookeville, where he served in many capacities for many years. He has previously held the positions of President of the Jaycees and the Little League. His favorite pastimes included gardening and woodworking, and he read westerns and novels about the American Civil War voraciously.
The members of his family and close friends fondly referred to him as “Pa Tom” since he was a dedicated spouse, father, and grandfather. Dorothy (Dot) Parkerson Nixon has been his wife for the past 64 years. He has two sons and daughters-in-law, Wayne and Marsha Nixon of Houston, Texas, and David and Gloria Nixon of Cookeville. He has five grandchildren: Rachel Beth Nixon of Cookeville, Amanda Nixon and Andrew Nixon of Charlottesville, Virginia, Molly Nixon of Seattle, Washington, and Katie Nixon of Houston, Texas. The following people have volunteered to serve as pallbearers: Wayne Nixon, David Nixon, Larry Nixon, Andrew Nixon, Joe Cameron, Frank Tittle, Chris Looper, and Jasper Swallows. Homer Hackett, Bill Bilbrey, Jerry Parkerson, Bill Parkerson, and Carlos Dobbs will serve as honorary pallbearers at the funeral service.
